10 Tips to Cooking with Marijuana

There are a few basic things you need to know about cooking with marijuana.

  1. The active ingredients in marijuana need "fat" to bind to.
  2. High temperature cooking damages the active ingredients in marijuana.
  3. Marijuana edibles are slower to have an effect on the patient.  Usually up to 1 hr.
  4. The effect of marijuana edibles typically lasts longer.
  5. The effect of marijuana edibles is more difficult to dose as it can take up to an hour or even slightly longer to feel any effects. Start slow by eating a small serving, and add more until the desired effect is reached.
  6. The effect from marijuana edibles is "different" than smoking.
  7. If you are concerned with someone smelling marijuana on your clothes, or breath, edibles offer a good option.
  8. Edibles provide a good option for younger patients, traveling patients, and patients with compromised lungs, or those who don't like the idea of smoking, even though marijuana has been found to not cause lung cancer.
  9. Eating marijuana edibles on an empty stomach is more effective.
  10. Marijuana butter, and infused oils make it easy to add cannabis to a variety of recipes.  The most important tip of all....  Do not FRY, or BROIL, or GRILL with cannabutter or marijuana oil.  HIGH temperatures destroy THC.  If cooking on the stove top, or in a casserole, add the marijuana oil at the end just long enough to melt it into your recipe.  If baking, use low temperature short baking times.  For instance cookies at 250 degrees farenheit.  If baking a casserole, bake until almost done, and in the last 5 minutes turn the temperature down to 250 and stir in the cannabutter or marijuana oil.  Just long enough to warm the butter to melt it, or warm the oil to disperse it in the recipe.  See marijuana recipes below.

Marijuana Butter | CannaButter | Weed Butter |Pot Butter

Marijuana butter is more commonly known as cannabutter.  Cannabutter is unsalted butter that has been heated at a low temperature while mixed with marijuana to extract the active ingredients from the marijuana plant.  Marijuana molecules bind to fat, so once marijuana plant matter is mixed with melted butter on a low temperature for 2-24 hours the molecules will release themselves from the plant matter, and bind to the butter.  The length of time varies widely, depending on the cook, and whether the canna butter is made on a stove top, or in a crock pot.  Cannabutter can be used in any recipe that calls for butter.  The potency depends on the potency of the plant that is used, and how much you use in a recipe.  Typically you would replace 1/4 to 1/2 of the butter in a recipe with canna butter.  It is best to start with small doses, and then work your way up to a dose that feels comfortable for you.   If you make a recipe weaker, by adding less cannabutter, you can eat more.   This recipe is a basic starting point, and can be made stronger by adding more marijuana plant material and less butter, or vice versa - made weaker by adding less marijuana plant material and more butter.

Juicing Marijuana

Several patients claim they have significant results from juicing marijuana, therefore more patients are starting to juice every week.  Claims of pain relief, and relief from conditions such as lupus are being reported.  When juicing marijuana, the plant is used fresh, not dried, therefore there is no psychotropic effect.  In other words, it won't get you high, as the thcA, has not been converted to THC.  CBD is another marijuana molecule that has been found to have a broad range of therapeutic benefits, and will likely provide benefits from juicing, as well as THCV, CBC, CBG, CBDV, as well as others . Bhang or Tea with Canna Milk

Bhang is a popular drink used to medicate.  It is very popular in India and Pakistan.  This beverage can be consumed hot or cold.

Tea (your choice)

1/4 cup of  Canna Milk

1 teaspoon sugar

To make the Canna Milk, heat buds and WHOLE milk in a saucepan over medium low heat for 20 minutes.  Make enough to save in a glass jar in the refrigerator.  No need to measure, just cover the buds with WHOLE milk.   Do not bring the milk to a boil.  Marijuana molecules bind to fat, so don't use non-fat, or low fat milk!  The trichomes will leave the buds and cling to the lipids in the milk. Cool to room temperature. Pour into a glass jar and place in the refrigerator. To make the bhang, brew your favorite tea. Add Canna Milk and sugar and stir. Garnish with shaved almonds and pistachios.  (optional)
